Courthouse set to reopen Tuesday as roof work ends
The closure order runs out at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, after eight days of shut doors in Carnesville.
The Franklin County Courthouse has been closed to the public since 12:01 a.m. on Monday, August 31, under an order issued because roof repairs were sending debris and heavy roofing material down around the building. The order runs until 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, so the courthouse is set to be open again when offices resume normal hours Tuesday morning.
Today is Labor Day, listed on the county calendar as an all day holiday, so Tuesday is the first regular business day either way. Franklin County Schools also list September 7 as a Labor Day holiday.
The county asked anyone needing help from the Clerk of Superior Court during the closure to call 706-384-2514.

Supreme Court stays appeals court ruling on political ad rates
The Court granted a stay of the Fourth Circuit's mandate in National Republican Congressional Committee v. Brown. The effect is to leave the Federal Communications Commission's lowest unit charge requirements for political advertising in place while the justices decide whether to hear the case. The majority said the appeals court likely lacked jurisdiction because the candidates went to court while their application was still pending at the FCC. Justice Jackson dissented.

The Army Corps of Engineers said on Aug. 26 that it will keep lake level restrictions in place at Hartwell Lake until a long term engineering fix is built for seepage at the Clemson Lower Diversion Dam Saddle Dike. The Corps is holding the lake to a target of 656 feet above sea level year round with a cap of 662 feet, down from a 660 foot summer level, and says the basin is in Level 2 drought with the lake already about 8 feet below its normal guide curve. It also says swim beaches stay dry below 657 feet. The Corps separately opened ten areas at Hartwell Lake for the 2026-2027 hunting season. The county is still taking applications for the Board of Equalization, and has posted a convenience center price change and an AED reporting form under the Mason Sells Act.
Where we could not look this morning. The Franklin County Chamber events calendar loaded a January 2026 view and listed no September or October dates. The Department of War releases page returned no release listings. The Lavonia-Carnegie Library page did not post holiday closings or program dates, and the library LibCal calendar and 921wlhr.com were not read. The county agenda center showed no September Board of Commissioners agenda. Emmanuel's two soccer schedule pages showed nothing posted after Aug. 30, so those lines are the last results those pages carried.
