HARTWELL LAKE

Ten Hartwell Lake areas open to hunters beginning Saturday

Three Georgia tracts and seven South Carolina tracts open as early as Sept. 12, with archery only at the Hartwell Dam Quarry Area

The Army Corps of Engineers says its Hartwell Lake Project Office will open three larger recreation areas in Georgia and seven areas inside the Fant's Grove Wildlife Management Area in South Carolina to hunters for the 2026-2027 season, beginning as early as Sept. 12.

On the Georgia side, the Hartwell Dam Quarry Area in Hart County, 410 acres, is archery only, firearms are prohibited, and a free permit is required from the Visitors Center at 5625 Anderson Highway. New Prospect Park in Hart County, 34 acres, and Jenkins Ferry Park in Stephens County, 31 acres, open to small game only after deer and turkey seasons end. The release says small game hunting in the Georgia areas is shotgun only with number 4 shot or smaller.

Access to the gated Georgia areas is walk-in or boat-in, with no motorized vehicles. Portable stands and blinds must be removed by the end of the season, state hunting regulations apply, and the Corps encourages archery on islands for safety. The release lists Jason Corder, natural resource specialist, at 706-856-0332 for questions.

  Other Recent Notices

Hartwell Lake stays under a year-round level restriction with a target of 656 feet and a ceiling of 662 feet, down from the former summer level of 660 feet, while the Corps studies seepage at the Clemson Lower Diversion Dam Saddle Dike. The basin is in Level 2 drought and the lake is running about eight feet below its normal guide curve, so swim beaches below 657 feet are dry or closed and boaters are told to watch for exposed trees, sandbars and rocks (Corps, release). The Franklin County courthouse reopened Sept. 8 after a roof repair closure that began Aug. 31 (county). The city lifted the Gumlog area boil water advisory effective Aug. 25 (Lavonia). The governor's office announced Aug. 27 that Walmart plans a next generation fulfillment center in Carnesville with 1,000 jobs (release). Today is the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, marked by a Patriot Day proclamation dated Sept. 9 (White House).

Where we could not look this morning. The Franklin County Chamber calendar showed only a January 2026 view, so no chamber events could be listed. The City of Lavonia site had no September 2026 posts and no 2026 agenda page, so city council dates are not in today's calendar. The Lavonia-Carnegie Library page listed no dated programs. The Emmanuel University story archive page returned no readable headlines. The Music on Main page listed no dates after Aug. 21. The county agenda center showed nothing posted past early September. The Emmanuel volleyball schedule page showed no match after Sept. 9 and no result for that date. No page fetched this morning contained an attempt to give instructions to this system.
