Three land use requests go before the county planning board tonight
A Lavonia rezoning, a campground request near Royston and a road frontage variance are on the 5:30 agenda.
The Franklin County Planning and Zoning Commission meets tonight at 5:30 at the Franklin County Justice Center, 7085 Highway 145 in Carnesville. The posted agenda lists three new business items, each a request to change how a specific tract of land can be used.
The first, RZ-2026-015, would rezone about 16.4 acres at 258 Whiting Road in Lavonia from Agricultural to Rural Residential for residential use, in District 1. The second, C-2026-002, seeks a conditional use permit for a glampground on about 18.68 acres on Dove Hill Road near Royston, in an Agricultural zone in District 4. The third, V-2026-006, asks for a variance to create two lots on about 23.22 acres at 889 Varner Road in Carnesville without the required 60 feet of road frontage.
The agenda also covers adoption of the August 20 minutes and a Board of Commissioners update, which the agenda notes included no planning and zoning items.

The Army Corps of Engineers said in late August that it will maintain lake level restrictions at Hartwell Lake until a long term engineering fix for seepage at a saddle dike is designed and built, and separately announced that ten areas are open at Hartwell for the 2026-2027 hunting season. Franklin County Schools has an electronic device policy out for public review. The Governor's office announced that Georgia was awarded about $499 million in federal water infrastructure funding tied to Hurricane Helene recovery, administered by the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority, with the list of submitted and fundable projects posted on the authority's site. The county has also posted that the courthouse reopened Sept. 8 after roof repairs.
Where we could not look this morning. The Corps of Engineers Hartwell Lake level restrictions page returned a 403 error on two attempts, so the current lake level could not be read. The Department of War releases page returned system errors and listed nothing. The Franklin County Chamber calendar showed no dated events. The City of Lavonia live feed and home page had nothing newer than August, and no 2026 council agenda page was found. The Lavonia Carnegie Library event calendar was not listed on the branch page.
