Fall Festival returns to downtown Lavonia on Saturday

Hundreds of vendors are expected. Start and end times are still not posted.

The Lavonia Fall Festival is set for Saturday, September 26 in downtown Lavonia, according to the Lavonia Downtown Development Authority. The festival page describes handmade goods, food, local shopping, festive activities and live entertainment, with hundreds of vendors expected.

The page does not list a start or end time, a street closure map, an admission price, or a schedule of performers. Anyone planning around downtown traffic on Saturday will need to watch for those details closer to the date.

Vendor applications are closed. The authority says people who still want a booth can join a waitlist through its 2026 festival application form.

H-1B entry restriction and $100,000 payment take effect today

A presidential proclamation signed September 18 restricts the entry of foreign nationals coming to work in specialty occupations on H-1B visas, running from today through September 21, 2027. Under the document, an H-1B petition for a worker located outside the United States must be accompanied or supplemented by a $100,000 payment, and the State Department must verify that the payment was received before approving a visa. The Secretary of Homeland Security may waive the restriction for named individuals, a company's workforce, or an industry on a finding that doing so is in the national interest.

Order gives Labor 30 days to start reviewing past H-1B wage filings

A companion executive order directs the Departments of State, Labor and Homeland Security to coordinate with Commerce, Education and the Small Business Administration on H-1B petitions and to share wage, employment, academic and industry data. It tells officials weighing an application to consider whether the sponsoring employer laid off comparable American workers in the past year or plans to. It gives the Labor Department's Wage and Hour Division 30 days to begin reviewing previously filed labor condition applications for possible action against sponsors.
