United States, Denmark and Greenland sign Arctic defense agreement

The White House posted the text of an agreement signed Sept. 22 by the United States, the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland. The document allows the United States to modernize Pituffik Space Base, to establish defense areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, and to place unmanned installations outside those areas under faster approval procedures. It grants United States forces free access and movement between the defense areas and overflight and landing rights across Greenland, and it bars states outside NATO from establishing military installations or keeping persistent forces there. It also requires agreement among the parties before states outside NATO and the European Union can control what the document calls particularly sensitive sectors, including critical infrastructure and resource extraction. The agreement has no expiration date and takes effect once Denmark and Greenland complete their parliamentary procedures.

  Other Recent Notices

Franklin County's news flash still carries several standing items: applications are open for seats on the Board of Equalization, a convenience center fee schedule change was posted Aug. 10, and the county is collecting automated external defibrillator locations under the Mason Sells Act. The courthouse roof repair closure ran Aug. 31 through Sept. 8 and normal operations have resumed; clerk services are at 706-384-2514. The City of Lavonia's live feed has posted nothing since the Gumlog boil water advisory was lifted Aug. 26. County agendas and minutes are posted for the Sept. 14 commissioners meeting and the Sept. 17 planning and zoning meeting.

Where we could not look this morning. The Hartwell Lake level restrictions page returned an error on both attempts, so lake levels and ramp restrictions are not in this edition, and the Savannah District news release page showed nothing newer than February. The Franklin County Chamber calendar displayed no dated events. The Lavonia Carnegie Library page did not show program listings. The City of Lavonia site showed no 2026 agenda page. The National Weather Service JSON feed for Lavonia returned a stale reading from Sept. 11, so the forecast here comes from the point forecast text page updated at 5:44 a.m. and no current temperature reading is included. Emmanuel University's news archive was not read this morning to stay within the site's fetch limit.
