State gas tax suspension is now in effect at the pump
Georgia's motor fuel tax is off through Oct. 29 under an order the governor signed Monday.
Gov. Brian Kemp signed an executive order on Sept. 28 suspending Georgia's motor fuel excise tax. The suspension took effect Sept. 29 and runs through Oct. 29. The state tax is 33.3 cents a gallon on gasoline and 37.3 cents a gallon on diesel.
The governor's office cited global market volatility and declared a state of emergency in order to make the suspension. The same order suspends state weight limits on commercial vehicles, which the office said is meant to hold down the cost of moving everyday goods.
The order applies statewide, so it covers pumps in Lavonia and the rest of Franklin County. It suspends the state tax only and does not change federal fuel taxes.

The county has not posted a new item to its news flash since late August. The most recent entries there are a Board of Equalization meeting notice and the courthouse roof repair closure that ended Sept. 8, with normal operations resumed. The City of Lavonia live feed has not been updated since Aug. 26, when the Gumlog area boil water advisory was lifted. The Lavonia Depot Farmers Market season is listed as running through October on the market page.
Where we could not look this morning. The Hartwell Lake level restrictions page returned an error both times it was tried, so there is no lake level or ramp closure update this morning. The Franklin County calendar page and the Franklin County Chamber calendar did not return event listings, so county dates here come from the county calendar feed. The Department of War releases page did not return content. The Emmanuel athletics news archive returned no headlines. The National Weather Service point forecast pages served stale cached data, so this morning's weather comes from the 6:35 a.m. Lavonia point forecast and the 6:35 a.m. zone forecast product, both issued Sept. 30.
